Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In May 2011, whilst pregnant with their first child Magnus, Laura began to itch. As with so many strange and wonderful things in pregnancy, they assumed this was normal. Laura mentioned it to the midwives, who asked her to come in immediately for bloods. The next morning, a Saturday, they hadn't heard anything, so they left a message for the midwives. They called back and asked them to head straight up to Aberdeen Maternity Hospital. Of course, they couldn't help themselves but google the condition, and were instantly full of worry.
Laura was 30 weeks pregnant, and google mentioned words such as "induction", "stillbirth" and "liver problems".
Luckily, the consultants at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital were very knowledgeable about the condition, and a plan was set for weekly bloods, monitoring, steroids, ultrasounds and an early induction at 37 weeks.
Sufferers will tell you there are no words to describe the itching. Your blood is full of bile salts, and you scratch until you bleed. The soles of your feet feet like you have fire ants crawling through your veins. ICP support are there for families by email, phone and online - day or night. Reassuring and informing, giving tips on how to manage the itch.
There is much yet to be discovered about this condition, and the work that ICP Support are doing not only in supporting families through this difficult time but also in research is invaluable to families such as ours.
As this condition usually reoccurs, Laura developed this condition again with the pregnancy with Helga. The condition begins to improve immediately upon giving birth for most people.
We are hoping to raise some funds as a token of our appreciation for the work of ICP Support.
