An estimated 2 million women in Africa suffer from obstetric fistula caused by prolonged, obstructed childbirth and lack of access to maternity care.
Aberdeen Women's Centre (AWC) in Freetown, Sierra Leone, have made a real difference in tackling this issue. A dedicated team of doctors, nurses and midwives, along with the support of physiotherapists and of course the support staff running the Centre provide quality maternity services to poor women and girls in Freetown and repair up to 600 obstetric fistula per year. This surgical procedure, followed by physical rehabilitation and classes in crafts, has the power to vastly improve women's quality of life and help them re-integrate into their communities with both their fistula and dignities repaired as well as new skills to make a living with.
Throughout the Ebola crisis, AWC bravely kept their doors open to pregnant women to give birth safely, as well as their newborns for aftercare.
