Story
Toby is my son and he is awesome. He is 5 years old and attends school where he is extremely happy and has lots of friends. He enjoys Lego, Superheroes, Transformers and being outdoors. He has ASD - 'Autism Spectrum Disorder'.
I'd known since Toby was a baby that he had Autism and it was without much surprise officially diagnosed when he was 3. Even before the diagnosis and before all of the information directed to us by the healthcare professionals who'd been involved, I spent days, evenings, late nights researching 'Autism'. What caused it? What could I do to make him better? There was so much information online about different interventions, triggers (MMR vaccines!) and dietary modifications etc. It was confusing and conflicting. It didn't help in what was already a difficult time for us.
As it happens, for us, thankfully Toby is doing great and our best intervention was and still is 'understanding'. I know however first hand how hard it can be to find the reliable advice you need and get the right guidance. For this reason I have chosen 'Research Autism' to raise money for by doing The Wolf Run.
On September 3rd I will be running 10km off-road through obstacles, mud pits, a lake and more! It is a very challenging event but when I think of what a star Toby is to have worked so hard when it's tough for him at times - it only seems fair that Mummy has to do this.
