Story
On the 1st January 2015 I made the decision to take up running.
I've always been pretty active but for the previous 6 months or so
(mainly due to a new addition to my family in the form of my amazing little boy) I'd completely neglected the exercise side of my lifestyle and decided enough was enough, I needed to be fit and healthy for Joe.
I've always done plenty of exercise but always hated running. I never thought I'd enjoy it as much as I now do and completed the Stafford Half Marathon (albeit injured) in March of this year and needed a bigger, tougher challenge! I've always watched the London Marathon on TV over the years and thought that one day I'd have to give it a go (i never realised how difficult it actual was to secure a place) and having been unsuccessful in the ballot I've managed to secure a charity place through a detailed application process, running for the fantastic
local hospice, the Dougie Mac!
A bit about the charity
Everyday Douglas Macmillan Hospice provides all hospice services
free of charge to adults with life limiting illnesses in the North
Staffordshire area and also provides supportive care for their families and carers. This would not be possible without the commitment of a multidisciplinary team of staff and volunteers who are vital in ensuring the services continue at the hospice and out in the community.
The hospice is committed to expanding and improving its services. Always striving to deliver the very best quality of care to meet the ever changing needs of the local community. We are working hard to deliver the most appropriate care closer to home, which encourages the development of patient choice and independence, so our patients
may achieve the very best quality of life, at a time when they need it most.
We must not forget the hospice needs to raise in excess of £11 million
this year to maintain the services, with 75% of the money raised coming from voluntary donations.
The training schedule I've got to undertake to get myself in the
shape needed to run the marathon, bearing in mind my little boy, two dogs and a full time job, is quite daunting but I'm sure with all of the kind support and donations from Family, Friends, Colleagues and Associates my target can be reached and who knows even surpassed!
