In July 2015 my very lovely boyfriend Bryan proposed to me as we crossed the finish line of the Snowdon Race. This was totally out of the blue and unexpected, one of life's highs. Five days later I had an ultrasound for something unrelated to my kidney. During the test the team found a tumor on my kidney. I had no symptoms and felt fit and healthy, this too was completely out of the blue and unexpected but this time I was left devastated.
Three months of tests followed leading to removal of my kidney in November. It was an extremely stressful period. I was treated and supported through this by a wonderful but pressured NHS from Consultant to those in my local surgery. I got a lot of advice and support from Kidney Cancer Scotland.
I got my running shoes back on just after Christmas and am feeling great. I am not sure where my story with Kidney Cancer goes from here but I am feeling positive and know that the NHS and Kidney Cancer Scotland are there to support me. I want to bring this wee chapter of my story to a close by going back to Snowdon this year and running the race again. This time to raise funds for Kidney Cancer Scotland.
I want to help make sure the charity continues to be able to provide information and support to all affected by Kidney Cancer and to continue to fund research into better treatments and tests. I am doing this to in thanks to Kathleen MacKenzie, specialist nurse who's support was invaluable.
I love running up Snowdon, it's my favorite race so not too much of a challenge. I am just grateful my tumor was found and I am able to do this.
