Story
Many thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In September 2010, my boyfriend, Eytan, and I will be travelling to Tanzania to attempt to climb Kilimanjaro. Neither of us have ever tried anything this ambitious, especially not at altitudes of 5000m +above sea level, but we both have hiking experience and have spent the past few months traipsing around the North of England in preparation for this big event (feel free to check out my blog documenting some of our walks so far and our progress in Tanzania when the time comes).
September 2010 marks the two year anniversary of the death of my Uncle John due to brain cancer. It was also during that summer that we lost my Great Granda Joe. Both men, although small in stature, were big in heart and over the years had raised tens of thousands of pounds for various charities through martial arts demonstrations and walking barefoot up the likes of Ben Nevis. I can't do either man justice using words, so I'll direct you to a lovely piece by Mike Amos, a columnist from the Northern Echo, printed just after John's death, which will describe them both much better than I can.
Although we'll be keeping our hiking boots firmly on during our trek, climbing Kilimanjaro is by no means a small feat and so we'd love to raise money for two charities that are especially close to our family; firstly, Cancer Research UK (on this page) and, secondly, the The Queen's Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment (see my other charity page at http://www.justgiving.com/LisaTanzania2 for donations to the Gurkhas).
You might want to know that Eytan and I have paid for the trip ourselves and so those who wish to sponsor us should know that their donation goes directly to the charities - none of it is used towards our trekking fees, park fees and equipment etc (like sponsored charity treks). If you feel inclined, please do sponsor us in memory of Uncle John and Granda Joe.
Lisa
