During the first visit to Nyakabale hospital in rural Uganda Karoli Lwanga School of Nursing had identified a lack of specific expertise in the delivery of teaching on neonatal and child health and a desire to provide learning that could potentially improve the quality of care for the infants and children in the hospital. As nurse teachers with many years of expertise in this field there was also a personal desire both to share our knowledge, skills and expertise and importantly learn about the challenges of delivering health care in a resource-poor country. Equally we believe that nurses and midwives worldwide should have a moral obligation to support and learn from each other. However, it is also hard to ignore the facts. Maternal and infant/child mortality rates are very high insub Saharan Africa. One in eight children will die before their fifth birthday. TheWHO Millennium Development Goals (4,5) include reducing infant mortalityand improving maternal health care indeveloping countries. It is clear education is a way forward.

However, the sick and preterm newborn infants were nursed in a wooden incubator in a very small room the size of a cupboard. We have raised funds to develop and equip a new neonatal nursery.

Having overseen the creation of a functional neonatal nursery we are returning Easter 2012 to update the midwifery and neonatal staff on resuscitation and care of the newborn, and re-equip the nursery. Please help us save newborn lives in a very rural part of Uganda. Any donation, however small will help us reach the target we need to achieve this work.
