Story
Hurrah! You're interested in donating money to an incredible cause. Let me tell you why that's the right decision.
During the Second World War, jewish refugees fleeing Nazi-occupied France took one of the last and most difficult routes of escape: the Freedom Trail. It was a dangerous path to take, but for many it was the only one away from persecution, genocide, conflict and death. Brave locals risked their own lives helping refugees and allied servicemen to safety, and there seems to be no better way to raise money for refugees in crisis today than walk it in memory of those who did and did not make it seventy years ago.
The Freedom Trail is a four-day trek (recommended for only experienced hikers and mountaineers, but let's breeze past that for now) from the south of France into northern Spain through the Pyrenees, reaching 2522m in height. It is an incredibly demanding trail, covering a huge range of terrain from mountain lakes to beech forests, encountering both warm Mediterranean temperatures and snow.
Anyone who knows me will know I am neither the most physically active nor sporty person; in fact, I'm very average in my outdoor pursuits. I am lucky in that the Freedom Trail will simply be a test of my own physical endurance, because for many it was the difference between life and death. Though I know I can never fully appreciate the intense suffering refugees must endure in search of basic human rights, I will do what I can to help. So, if not for the refugee campaign, please donate to watch me drag myself through the Pyrenees, roll down some mountains and become even more dishevelled than I already am. Thank you.
