My story as some people may know my Nan (Dianne Thompson) was an amazing woman helping my mum raise me form a baby. She was a strong woman in every aspect of her life and last year sadly I had to say my final goodbye.
In 2008 She was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, she fought so hard despite nearly losing her battle a few times and against all the odds she beat it with such strength some of us would never been able to find and was given the all clear.
After getting the all clear she had a new lease of life. And started to make plans to enjoy her second chance at life. like applying for her first passport to go on holiday abroad which she has never done before. Sadly this dream would never happen.
In 2012 only a matter of months after she'd been given the all clear we received a call telling us that she had collapsed at her home, after being rushed into hospital the doctors confirmed she had a major stroke. She was in a coma and we were given the grave news that they didn't expect her to regain consciousness. But they clearly didn't know my Nan. Yet again she's defied the odds and came back to life. She spent the next few months in hospital going through rehabilitation but there wasn't much anybody could do, her brain was severely damaged from the stroke she lost her speech she couldn't read or write she couldn't eat and was unable to walk as she was paralysed on one side of her body she needed 24 medical care so we were forced to find a nursing home to care for her.
We already knew the best home was Deershurst as we'd been looking for a home for my great nan who has Alzheimer's little did we know my nan would move in first. Closely followed a few months later my my great nan who still remains being cared for now. Deershurst care home is part of the Brunelcare charity. Deershurst has won awards such as the "quality of life kite mark" for its care to residents so this was an easy choice to make. The level of care goes far beyond our every expectation. They really do deserve more credit.
After nearly 4 years in deershurst, receiving care way beyond the port of call by the staff she sadly passed away peacefully in her sleep on the 14 January 2015. It gave us great comfort knowing that she spent her final years not only being so well looked after but that she spent it in under the same roof as her mum.
I have chosen brunelcare as my charity as they made the last remaining years of her life the best they can be. They do not receive the recognition they deserve, and just generally want to say thanks for what they did for her. Please help by donating as little or as much as you can.
