Story
To buy a brick for our STEKA village it costs just 2 pence, meaning for £20 you can buy one thousand bricks! For 7 tonnes of sand it costs roughly £25, and for a single bag of cement it's around £7.
Each of the three buildings requires 150 bags of cement, 35 tonnes of sand and 45,000 bricks - creating one block and two classrooms.
Give life to a child today!
STEKA is a grass roots Malawian charity created by Godknows Maseko and his wife Hellen, to provide a family home for (currently 56) very vulnerable children rescued from abusive situations or living alone on the streets of Blantyre, Malawi. He also campaigns against early marriage and for children’s rights. STEKA children are given an education (as long as fees can be paid) but in a country where 54%
of the population live below the poverty line, more is needed to help them into more sustainable future lives.
Godknows, (having himself been trafficked as a child and escaped from a life on the streets) understands how to transform things for these children. He also wants to help other street children achieve more sustainable futures by building a STEKA village – consisting of workshops to teach life-changing skills such as IT and electronics and, eventually, a youth forum for children to find their voice and therapeutic resources such as sports fields to help them deal with trauma through football therapy.
Each building (consisting of a teaching classroom and a workshop) costs £7,000 to build. And any group raising enough for a room will have it named after them with a plaque fixed to commemorate the contribution. They will also receive photos and a
short film about the project to use on websites, in social media and so on (this may be useful for larger organisations).
