Story
Hello!
As it's Christmas and tis the season for being jolly and giving - I thought we could do something really special and come together to buy a child a pair of hearing aids!
As many of you know, earlier this year I went out to India and experienced first hand the fantastic work of Sylvia Wright and her team. During my time there I stayed in the Rangammal School for hearing impaired children. This is a day and boarding school which Sylvia set up providing a free and quality education to deaf children within the local community.
When Sylvia arrived in India 30 years ago, she noticed a high number of deaf children in the local population (mainly due to childhood infections and consanguineous marriages). These children did not do well in the main stream school system where there would be no extra support for their needs. For this reason, many children did not attend school, some being labelled as 'slow' and their hearing impairment undiagnosed, and understandably these children had little hope of fulfilling their potential.
Sylvia's school has provided these children with a well deserved education and allowed them to develop in a supportive and happy environment. The children come to the school from the age of 4 and stay up until their final exams when they are 16. Many of the children do really well in their exams and go on to higher education and university.
This year, the Sylvia Wright Trust has been focusing on a project aiming to provide hearing aids to each child in the school. They are digital programmed hearing aids and are tailored to each child's own hearing needs. The Trust received a grant from Hear the World Foundation and along with other donations have managed to fit hearing aids to 157 of 197 children!
It costs around £285 for a pair of hearing aids and this includes the supply, programming and maintenance for each child. I was hoping that between us we could raise £285 to help give one more child a pair and help move towards the goal of every child at the school having hearing aids. Its such a fantastic gift - helping a child fulfil their potential...priceless!
I have attached some images of the children getting their hearing aids fitted - it is wonderful to see!Thank you for reading and I hope you all have a very merry Christmas!
