Story
Mahili pa Watoto is a pre-school for deprived children, near a slum on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya.
On my recent trip to Nairobi I went to visit and see their new school building recently built with generous support. I was impressed with the dedication of staff and the vision to improve the lives of local children and families, giving them a better start in life.
Children attending are mostly from the slum and 4 to 7 yrs old, headed otherwise for a life on the streets. They would be without food for 2 or 3 days a week if it was not for the school meals this school provides.
Mahili pa Watoto is run by Kenyans for Kenyans with the help of UK support through the Seed Sowing Network.
The project provides meals, comfort, protection, guidance and basic reading, writing and arithmetic lessons for destitute kids. The aim is for children to enter state primary education within two years, which (in theory) is free in Kenya. On graduation to school they assist with uniform & basics. It makes a huge difference to these children’s lives.
The school does not get state funding & costs approx £20,000 per annum to run - that’s all. Cost per child per month is approx £24.00.
Money goes directly towards books, equipment, food & building.
