We work directly with communities to transform animal welfare in Sri Lanka

Story

Millennium Elephant Foundation is teaming up with Dogstar Foundation to take their mobile spay neuter truck to host a sterilisation clinic for the dogs and cats at MEF C2C project in the Weragala village near Habarana, Sri Lanka.

Dog population management and sterilisation for owned and free roaming dogs/cats is vital across Sri Lanka.

The villagers in the Weragala village are poor people who have increased worry with human elephant conflict. They do not have the means to support the dogs/cats but they do the best they can.

MEF has been supporting the small village of Weragala for over 20 years, our project Conflict to coexistence was set up in 2012 with many MEF volunteers having had the opportunity to work alongside farmers and get to know the villagers. Those volunteers also have seen a lot of stray dogs/cats and even owned dogs/casts who suffer from skin conditions, worms and every visit there are always additional puppies
which have been born.

The total cost to host the sterilisation clinic per day is around £1000, We estimate that we need to do at least 3 day clinics but if able to raise the funds we would love to do 5 days.

We will aim treat 50 dogs/cats per day and each treatment includes

  • Sterilised
  • Rabies Vaccination
  • Skin treatment vaccination
  • A year’s supply of wormer for their dog.
  • Educational leaflet in how to look after their dog.

Those dogs who's skin is really bad will need to have advocate applied, this costs around $5 per dog and we will review this on a dog to dog bases.

Dogstars trained catching team will go out each morning and catch the free roaming dogs, while MEF volunteers and staff will ensure the dog owners bring their dogs/cats to the clinic.

The team of vets and assistance will be at the mobile clinic performing surgeries and ensuring all dogs and cats are cared for with volunteers also helping with after surgery care.

On the day MEF & Dogstar will also use the time to educate owners and children in how to approach dogs and also on diet, exercise and chaining or kennelling.

It will also be fun for the children as we will set up a children’s corner where they can colour an educational books and dogs, have face painted and play with our volunteers.

Please help us by donating what you can.

£20 – can steralise one dog/cat including its rabies and skin vaccinations

£5 can treat one dog with severe skin condition with Advocate

£4 provides wormer for one dog for a year

£1 can get a colouring educational book for a child.

Thank you so much for your support.
