Story
Apart from making me super-fit (relatively), raising money for Media Action is a cause close to my heart.
Following the earthquake in Nepal, which affected the lives of millions, Media Action aired special programmes (through channels such as radio, television and mobile) to provide people affected by crises with actionable, practical information which they can use to survive and recover. In the wake of a humanitarian disaster, people need answers to questions such as: What happened? Where and what aid is coming? What risks am I facing and how can I protect myself? How can I search for my family? Which roads are safe to travel?
The programmes were able to reach millions of people with the information they needed. They had people from the worst affected areas contacting them directly, saying they were able to get through their pregnancy safely or find support to demolish dangerous buildings as a result of listening to their programmes.
In 2013 I was privileged to see first hand the work of Media Action in Dhaka, Bangladesh when I was asked to help set up the finance tools for a drama based around maternity and healthcare issues.
So not only is it just about spreading the value to "inform, educate and entertain" but also training people across the developing world to do this for themselves.
