Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
From March to December 2013, I volunteered with Soft Power Education, specifically focusing on these two projects. Using my skills as a trained teacher I worked closely with the 6 Ugandan Pre-School staff to collaboratively develop a more interactive and child centred teaching curriculum. I also worked alongside the SEN Project Manager in developing and implementing a Child Protection Policy and creating a lesson plan aimed at teaching students in Primary Level 6 about child protection and how to keep safe.
Improving teaching methods and adjusting curriculum is an ongoing process and one that can only be truly effective if continued and monitored over the next year. What I have been working on with these teachers, things like classroom management strategies, behaviour management strategies, assessment and reporting methods, undertaking colleague observations, concise lesson planning and implementing organisational methods and improve the effectiveness of their work.
In 2014 I will stay on with Soft Power Education to continue my work as an Educational Consultant for the Pre-School and SEN staff. Essentially, I help to teach the teachers and communicate both our progress and concerns with the Project Manager. I am on the ground, working with them to solve problems and improve the effectiveness of their work.
This is a learning process for both the teachers and myself. What we have done so far can be seen as step one. There is much more to do. The SEN teachers, physiotherapists and occupational therapists have plans to further develop new sensory/ practical activities for the students and improve the existing methods of assessment. The changes we hope to achieve within the curriculum and the sensory activities need to be monitored, evaluated over time and adjusted accordingly. Another year is required to properly assess these changes and to transition the teachers as well as the students into our revised curriculum and methods. It is important that we do this properly and take the time required to make it last. If we do, our work to date will benefit not only the students and communities of 2014 but all of those who follow after them.
