Mary lived life with joy until the grand old age of 87. Or, as she would say, at the age of 18, as you are only as old as you feel...
How do you begin to describe Mary and her life? As those who loved her knew, it was frustratingly impossible to explain to others about her: from someone who drove her car everywhere, galavanted around the world on cruises and home networked the 101 computers in her house, she was truly a one-off who was never afraid to do anything. Her electric drill was always out so she could do some DIY!
She was a wonderful mother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt, friend and of course, the best grandmother anyone could wish for. She was 'Nanny' to many, and Tiny Nanna to us. When she found out about that nickname she responded "tiny? As if!" She would do anything for her family and always knew what we needed before she did, including producing a pile of Euros from the bottom of her bag when we enquired if she had any spare. Mary Poppins has nothing on her...
Mary was born in 1929 in Liverpool to a sea-faring family. She loved her city and loved the sea, and wanted to visit every port in the world. Whilst she didn't quite manage that, she travelled all over the world independently, once getting picked up by police for trying to walk into the dangerous area of Sao Paolo. Her response: "I'll be fine, I've dressed like a bag lady on purpose." And off she went, even the police couldn't stop her!
She was a person whose glass was always completely full, and who trail-blazed her way through life, setting the standard for us all. She was one of the first of her family's generation to get a degree; she worked in senior management when women typically stayed at home; she re-trained to become a computer lecturer because she loved her technology. Her motto was "I can do anything I want, and so you can you." We were all so proud of her.
Words cannot express how much we will miss our Nanny (and the treasures she could produce that had been stored in her loft). She doesn't leave a hole, she leaves a whole canyon in our lives. But we are all better people from knowing her and having her love and support.
We have chosen the charity KIND because it is a children's charity in her home city of Liverpool that supports underprivileged children. Their SEED centre provides education and support for families, and the charity sends 300-400 children every year on an adventure holiday to Wales. Mary always had a love for Wales, and believed that every child should have the opportunity to go on holiday and be carefree, even for a short time.
