Story
Hello!
This June, we'll be attempting the National Three Peaks Challenge - walking up Ben Nevis (Scotland), Scafell Pike (England), and Snowdon (Wales) - hopefully within 24 hours. We'll be doing this to raise funds for the Macular Society.
This is important to Jess as her best friend of 25 years, Kayley, suffers from Stargardts Disease - this is an inherited eye condition that causes a reduction in your central (detailed) vision, which you use when looking directly at something. Kay has created a blog to explain her condition from her point of view: https://stargardt.wordpress.com/kayleys-story/
Having a condition such as Stargardts can make day to day life very stressful at times, as it is not a 'visible' condition to others; Kay finds it difficult to recognise people and is unable to drive. The Macular Society helps people affected by offering local support groups and counselling, a service Kay has used. The counselling service really helped when she felt there was no other way to turn, and could not eat due to anxiety; The Macular Society provided someone to listen to all of Kay's concerns about her condition, and tools to cope with obstacles. Despite all of the challenges she faces, Kay is pursuing her dream of becoming an artist, and has recently begun work in her own art studio.
We hope that one day there will be a cure, as there is currently no treatment. Hopefully any money raised from our challenge will go towards finding it.
Thanks for reading; every penny counts!
