‘Walk 4 Grumps’  1/6/14  -  Update

I am pleased to say that Sharyn and Eddie's Walk 4 Grumps has raised a  total of £780.  Well done and thank you to all of you who worked so hard to achieve this, it has exceeded our hopes.

Susan

‘Walk 4 Grumps’  1/6/14.

My son Edward, Maurice’s youngest Grandchild, often talks about his Grumps.  I thought it would be nice to do something that Edward and his little friends could share, not only to raise money in my father’s memory, but also to raise awareness of the hospice.

I organised a sponsored walk from Brighton marina to Rottingdean and back specifically for Edward and his friends. In all 12 children, between 9 months and 7 years old, and 16 adults took part. The walk was over 5 miles, longer than we had thought, and the weather was hotter than we had expected. When the walkers returned to the marina they were greeted with drinks and cake.

Even though the sun was out and it was baking hot all the children managed to complete it and had a great time, some even stopped for a paddle in the sea on the way. Although tired by the end of the walk, it amazed us all how quickly the children recovered and were soon running around having fun.

Not all the money is in yet but we think the walk raised over £600.

A lovely afternoon shared with some great friends, making more lovely memories to treasure.

Thank you to everyone who participated and to those who supported the participants so generously.

Three months has passed and my family and I are managing to cope with our sorrow, supported by the love and care that we are receiving from so many of you, we thank you and will keep you in our hearts.

I have recently been going through the poems that Maurice wrote to us and decided to share this one with you all.  It was written in one of my birthday cards, I can't remember which birthday as I was fortunate to have shared so many of them with him.

I hope you all agree that he was an amazing man who loved his family very much.

  • Life is but a short while
  • We share with many more
  • We soon forget the bad ones
  • The good ones we adore

  • As I count the good points
  • Which add up to my life
  • My thoughts return to one thing
  • That’s you my darling wife

  •  For beauty is a mystery
  • It’s there for all to see
  • Yet very few can hold it
  • In quantities like thee

  • Kindness is so transient
  • A fleeting, passing thing
  • Which gushes from you darling
  • Just like a bubbling spring

  •  Happiness is limited
  • As scarce as scarce can be
  • Which you pass on to others
  • In endless quantity

  • Time is but a motion
  • For ever on the go
  • It never had a starting point
  • And it will always flow

  •  Love is an emotion
  • Which we can’t comprehend
  • My love for you is timeless
  • As it will never end.

  • All my love always
  • Maurice

21st February 2014

My family and I would like to thank you all for your generous donations and your lovely thoughts of Maurice.

It was so good to see so many of you at the Service of Thanksgiving and to hear the many lovely memories that were shared with us.

9th February 2014

On the 3rd February 2014 we lost a terrific man to a horrid disease;  It came upon him with great speed and intensity and we had only a few days warning before it took him from us.

What was a nightmare for my family and I was made bearable by the unfailing love and support we were given by the staff at St Peter and St James Hospice in Wivelsfield.  Their care, for not only my husband, but for each and every member of his family gave us strength and comfort and ensured he had a calm and peaceful end.

In recognition of their committment and support we are determined to ensure that other families who find themselves in our position are able to have the same support that we had.

This portal has been set up to allow anyone who wishes to make a donation in Memory of Maurice to do so easily whilst giving them the opportunity to mark the happiness he brought to their lives.  In addition my family intends to organise and carry out a number of fund raising events in order to achieve the target we have set ourselves.

Please accept our thanks for the help you give us in the achievement of our aims.

Our love and best wishes,  Susan, our daughters Nicola and Sharyn and our grandchildren Rose, Olive, Bronte and Eddie  xxx

About the charity

All of our services are free of charge to patients and their loved ones. We rely on our local community for 86% of our funds as we receive less than 14% of our funding from the Government and have to raise more than £2.6 million every year through fundraising. That’s £7,200 every single day.
