Story
Nobody could believe that survivors of trafficking, torture or other abuses deserve to be imprisoned without reason. Yet, past trauma plays little or no part in the Home Offices' decision to detain many asylum seekers.
Too often, those who have been abused remain in detention despite evidence which gives them a right to freedom. Luckily, Medical Justice sends voluntary doctors and lawyers into detention centres, reporting and supporting survivors of torture, trafficking and other abuse. It is absolutely essential that Medical Justice can continue helping potential refugees, and economic migrants, who have been utterly failed by our government.
This charity should not have to exist. Yet, without Medical Justice, thousands more immigration detainees would be silenced or even left to die without medical treatment every year.
Giving up pizza may sound like a silly challenge, but I wanted to quit an everyday freedom. Being free to eat the food you want, whenever you want, is one of the many little normalities that make up life for people outside of detention. Those inside get no home-cooked meals and the conditions are so poor that hunger strikes are common. The fact that this happens to human beings on our doorstep, who have committed no crime, is shocking. I hope that giving up something I eat on a weekly basis can be a fun way of spreading awareness of a serious problem in Britain, as well as raising money for the amazing work Medical Justice does despite all odds.
