“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” - Edmund Burke
The people this charity is aimed at those good men and woman that did something, so evil wouldn't triumph. As a result, they are often traumatised and can't return to normal life. In some case, sadly taking their own lives to escape that trauma. Its a horrible circle and these people, who fight for our freedom deserve our respect and support.
It isn't just veterans though, mental illness and PTSD can strike out of the blue and effect anyone. Mental Illness and PTSD are often misdiagnosed or people don't seek support for their illness. It's an odd concept to have an injured mind and people struggle to face up to it and accept they are injured. Like a broken arm, even the mind needs treatment or time to mend. The term originated in the Vietnam war however today, the term PTSD can be used to describe the psychological problems resulting from any traumatic event.
I cant even imagine what it must be like to lose someone you love to suicide or watch someone completely change after suffering PTSD or mental illness. I have been quite fortunate in life and was raised in the "lucky country" - Australia. The only war I've ever known is for the inside line surfing at Kirra, or for first place in the ice cream queue on the streets of Sydney. We have no Great War and no World War, yet we do live in a world with great instability and there are people who are still very giving, vigilant and willing to fight for the freedom we can take for granted.
I aim to celebrate the life that was fought for so valiantly by brave men and woman in service all over the world and raise awareness for the struggle they often face with PTSD or mental illness. I want to encourage everyone to check in on their love ones and if they are needing help, to get help from a professional.
I've already booked flights and will be camping at the base of the Eiger for a few days in order to explore the region and do some hikes. I would like to summit the Eiger but don't know what the conditions are like at this point so shall investigate and keep everyone posted!
