Story
Following the thrill of competing for Great Britain at Goalball in the London Paralympics 2012, I have been seeking my next adventure. One of the most heart warming moments of the games was witnessing a moment between two children who were sitting in wheelchairs and their father. They had just spectated at a wheelchair basketball match. For the first time in their lives the two children had realised a new possibility. They could be heroes. It didn’t matter that they were wheelchair users or that they had spent their whole lives being told about things they couldn’t do. They, like the wheelchair basketball players they’d just watched, could be heroes.
It is this idea of new possibility which inspires me. I want to be a part of bringing new possibility to the lives of people who have a disability.
Through the Roof take refurbished second hand wheelchairs
from Britain to less economically developed countries where they distribute to people who need
them and who wouldn’t ordinarily be able to acquire them. Occupational
therapists and physiotherapists like myself assist by assessing each person who
needs a wheelchair to prescribe the correct seating. After the wheelchair has
been provided, the charity follow up at regular intervals to ensure that the
wheelchair remains appropriate for the user.
My hope is to see many people receive a wheelchair and in doing so, I hope that they can experience new possibilities, new independence and
above all, an improved quality of life.
All the therapists need to raise their own funds to attend
and serve on the trips.
I am planning to attend a trip to Kenya in May 2015. I hope you can come alongside me as I prepare for this adventure. Any donations and/or prayers are gratefully received no matter how great or small. Thank you!
