Story
Meet Derek, a truly handsome Shepherd Crossbreed.
Derek was only 12 weeks old when he came to the Sanctuary in July 2014. He was an unclaimed stray from the local pound.
Martine and Michael and their family have always had Dogs
from the Sanctuary and have fostered Pups from us too. They were at the Sanctuary the day that Derek came to us and instantly fell in love.
The original plan was to foster Derek for 2 weeks or until a new home was found. But like many times before with Martine and Michael, this plan backfired on them. After 2 months of “Fostering”, Derek became a
permanent member of the family and was officially adopted.
A short time after Derek was adopted he started to become grumpy after his walks and seemed to be in pain. After a trip to the Vets and some X-rays it was discovered that Derek had severe Hip Dysplasia. Derek’s condition was not suitable for treatment and he was given up to another year of life to live before his condition would leave him in unbearable and untreatable pain. This news devastated his family, that their beloved pet and family member would have to be put to sleep at just 2 years of age.
Recently however, Derek had a check-up and the X-rays showed an improvement in his left Hip. This vital change in his condition meant that Derek was now a candidate for a total Hip Replacement. Hope at last!
Derek will be having his surgery in March and it will cost a total of £4,500 but his pet insurance policy will only pay for £2000 of this
cost. £2,500 is a lot of money but it will give Derek back the life that he deserves. Martine and Michael’s Daughter has started fundraising to help pay for Derek’s surgery and has already raised £369 so far.
We at the Sanctuary are appealing for help from You, the most important people involved in the work that we do. You, the people that enable us to give the animals that we help, animals like Derek, a second chance at life no matter what the cost.
