Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
We are approaching the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, one of the largest battles of the entire 1st World War, with Britain suffering more than 57,000 casualties in the first day alone. Over the two days of the battle, the Ulster Division lost some 5,500 killed, wounded or missing and, of these, around 2,500 had been killed.
The Battle of the Somme was known by the Generals as the 'Big Push' and planned to break German resistance by non-stop shelling for days and nights. As a mark of respect to these heroic men from Ulster, who were part of the 'BigPush', we are making our own big push by cycling from Mountjoy to the Somme which is a distance of c590 Km over 6 days.
