Story
This year the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund UK celebrates its 20th birthday, having been founded in May 1996. During that time, the charity has raised many millions of pounds to help support the programmes of work of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund in South Africa. The primary role in the UK is fundraising, but the charity also does advocacy work with children and young people throughout the country and in Europe.
The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund was founded by Nelson Mandela soon after South Africa’s first democratic election in 1994. It was his personal response to the misery and hopelessness inflicted on many of South Africa’s children, the most innocent part of any society. He committed one-third of his annual presidential salary to found and perpetuate the Fund, a generosity that has been met by people from all walks of life throughout the world in many ways.
The work of NMCF UK would have not been possible without the awesome support of a great company called Maitland. Since 1996, Maitland has supported the charity by giving office space, providing pro-bono legal services and making a contribution towards salary and other expenses. Maitland staff from their various offices world-wide have also helped support the charity in so many wonderful ways, undertaking sponsored challenges, organising fundraising projects and helping at our events. A fantastic company, who take their corporate social responsibility seriously – we’ve travelled a wonderful journey with Maitland for 20 years!
As part of this year’s NMCF UK 20th Birthday, 5 colleagues from the Maitland London office and NMCF UK have teamed up to run the British 10K on July 10th in order to raise funds for NMCF UK.
We hope you will help Barbara, Kathi, Nick, Nicola & Rupert as they tread the streets of London on a Sunday morning in order to raise much needed funds for the charity’s important work!
