Our Story

Naomi Stetson and Jill Bunker have volunteered to travel to Malawi for 2 weeks and train Healthcare Workers to set up blood pressure clinics in the rural areas in Malawi to enable them to treat thousands of patients who may not otherwise receive any care for high blood pressure. There are in excess of 130,000 people with high blood pressure and to access treatment they have to walk many miles to Blantyre from the surrounding rural areas. Sadly many don’t get to the hospital and therefore never receive any treatment. They desperately need Healthcare Workers who are trained to manage high blood pressure to be able to deliver the care in the rural areas in local health centres; this would allow more people to access treatment which will help prevent the devastating effects of strokes and heart attack. Naomi and Jill are volunteering under the auspices of the British Hypertension Society who are the leading charity in the UK for research and education for high blood pressure. The money raised will pay for the healthcare workers accommodation, travel expenses and training material (paper and pens/pencils) so they can attend the training programme. The funds raised will also pay for blood pressure monitors and stethoscopes which we will take with us from the UK to give to health centres, as many have no method of even measuring blood pressure.

Blantyre is the second largest city in Malawi with a population of more than one million, yet has only one hospital called Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.  Malawi is one of 10 poorest nations in the world where the annual per capita health expenditure is a mere £42. One of the biggest health problems Malawians’ face is high blood pressure, which leads to stroke, heart disease and kidney disease. There is only one blood pressure clinic in Blantyre which is held at the hospital. This project will ensure more local  hypertension clinics can be set up to reduce  peoples high blood pressure and thus reduce their risks of heart attack, strokes and kidney disease.

We would be grateful if you could help us to help the people of Malawi access high blood pressure treatment and care. You can do this by donating to our Just Giving page to enable this important and life changing project to succeed.

With very many thanks

Naomi and Jill
