Story
Hi everyone,
As most of my friends and family are aware I have been giving the amazing opportunity to go to Kiwoko Hospital in Uganda for my elective placement in January.
Kiwoko hospital is a charitable Christian hospital set up in 1988 by an Irish GP Dr Ian Clarke, 80km from the Ugandan capital of Kampala. It began as a small clinic under a tree and has since developed into a 'modern hospital' serving the people of the Lewero triangle. This area is widely poverty stricken. People in Uganda have to contribute to the cost of their healthcare, yet, due to the lack of income it is not always possible, meaning that they may go without. However, at Kiwoko hospital no one is turned away thanks to the 'Good Samaritan Fund' which pays for the shortfall.
An estimated 4700 women and girls die in Uganda each year, in pregnancy and childbirth making it vitally important that a hospital like Kiwoko is available to these women to provide them with antenatal care from a skilled provider, have a safe environment in which to birth their babies and to have some sort of postnatal care following the birth of their children. This is why I am fundraising for this amazing charity which provides much needed care to people who need it the most.
