Story
Over the past 3 years I've had first hand experience of this amazing charity, having participated in their latest project in Africa.
In 2014 I was invited, as a Lactation Consultant, to present two lactation workshops to neonatal nurses, midwives and doctors from Panzi Hospital, Democratic Republic of Congo, and 4 hospitals in Rwanda.
Sick and preterm infants often have delayed oral feeds and their mothers are not adequately supported to initiate and maintain lactation, resulting in an insufficient breast milk supply, thus, a need to supplement with infant formula which is almost impossible to make up safely and unaffordable for most families. The lactation workshops were a great success, giving participants the knowledge and skills to be able to support mothers to express their breast milk, store it safely and maintain a breast milk supply that will be able to continue to nourish and protect their babies once they’re discharged home.
We also set up a mothers breast feeding room at Panzi Hospital, DRC, and Muhima Hospital, Rwanda, equipped with breast pumps, storage bottles, microwave to sterilise equipment and fridge to store expressed breast milk.
Following our success at Panzi Hospital, Bukavu, Birthlink has been invited to lead a new project at Heal Africa Hospital in Goma. I am hoping to accompany them on their next visit early 2017.
