Story
Thanks for visiting our JustGiving page.
We are all turning 50 this year and thought a bike ride in Northern Spain would be a good way to celebrate getting a "little older". We have recently cycled the final 270 kms (inc over 4,500 metres of climbing) of this ancient pilgrimage route over 6 days, ending Saturday 28 May.
Why we did this?
It was a chance for the four of us to celebrate reaching our half centuries, step out of our busy lives, be social, have fun, do something new and challenging and appreciate the historical and spiritual nature of this ancient route. Last but by no means least, we all agreed that we'd like to raise some much needed money for the Syrian refugees - so any contributions to the CAFOD Refugee Crisis Appeal would be appreciated.
Why help Syrian refugees?
As you know the war in Syria has caused a humanitarian crisis on a staggering scale, and it's getting worse every day. Over 250,000 people have been killed and more than 6.6 million children, women and men driven from their homes. Your donations will help CAFOD's sister agencies in the Caritas network in Syria to support traumatised refugees. CAFOD work with people of all faiths and none.
Interested in the history of The Camino De Santiago?
This pilgrimage route was given recognition of World Heritage by the UN because of its historical and spiritual significance. In short, after the death of Christ, his disciples dispersed around the world, with St. James travelling to Spain where he spent several years. After his time in Spain he returned to Jerusalem and was beheaded by Herod. His followers took his body back to Spain. When his remains were discovered in the early 9th Century, a church and monastery were built and the town of Santiago was born. News of the discovery spread and the pilgrimage began. St. James is the patron saint on Spain.
