Streetdoctors was founded in 2008 in Liverpool by two medical students.
The aim is to teach life saving emergency care skills to at-risk young people in order to save lives. In doing this, there is the direct consequence of young people saving their peer's lives and acting appropriately when faced with someone who is bleeding or unconscious.
The training delivered by medical student volunteers also highlights the consequences of being stabbed this helps to discourage weapon carrying. Furthermore this training gives young people the opportunity to envision a different future.
I am honoured to have been a trustee of Streetdoctors since January 2015. In my working life as an adult and paediatric emergency medicine consultant I see the after-effects of youth violence and to see the enthusiasm and selflessness of the volunteers and the data regarding life saving interventions carried out by young people following training sessions is truly rewarding.
What started out from the vision of two hopeful enlightened and inspired medical students has grown today to 2899 young people attending sessions in 2015 at centres ranging from London to Southampton, Newcastle, Leeds, Birmingham, Nottingham, Bristol, Warwick and of course Liverpool!
