Story

***MY TARGET ONLY PAYS FOR 24 HOURS OF CARE, SPONSOR BIG***

In November, last year my Grandpa sadly lost his 10 month battle with Cancer. After beating the disease before he was determined to beat it again.

My Grandpa’s fight is personal to me and by no means unique. I know that there are a further 120 people that Lindsey Lodge Hospice help and assist daily – going through what he went through. The Hospice really helped my Grandpa when surgery, drugs and modern medication failed. They supported and comforted him when everyone else had given up.

I know what I went through, watching day by day the person I love disappearing and deteriorating in front of my eyes and I want to help others get the care they deserve. As a way of giving back to the hospice that tended, nursed and looked after him throughout his final months I am going to undertake a series of three mentally and physically challenging events.

Firstly, I will be undertaking a Skydive on 27th May 2012. No matter how petrifying the thought of jumping out a plane is, it will not come close to how scared my Grandpa was and how other terminally ill patients are feeling right now.

As a tribute to his bravery and determination, I will be running in the Humber Half Marathon on 24th June. My Grandpa did not give up throughout his battle; his strength will encourage me to make it to the end.

Finally, to complete my Tri-Challenge I will be taking part in what I would consider my most painful challenge - a triathlon. On 9th September I will be completing the Leeds Triathlon at Roundhay Park (Waterloo Lake), where I will be Running 10km, Swimming 1.5km and Cycling 44km! Regardless of all the hard training required my pain and suffering will not be comparable by any means to sufferers of this disease. Please feel free to come and push, support, encourage or drag me across the finishing lines!

We are indebted to Lindsey Lodge Hospice for providing my Grandpa with a fantastic level of care - they nursed his pain, comforted him when he was scared, reassured him, listened to him and cared for him. The staff at Lindsey Lodge Hospice also supported us through a very difficult time and enabled us to be by my Grandpa’s side 24/7 even providing us with a bed to stay with him at night!

To put it into perspective Lindsey Lodge Hospice costs £3.50 a minute to run, they help over 120 people a week with life limiting illnesses by providing both day care and a 24/7 in patient service. My target only pays for 24 hours care.

My Grandpa did not deserve it, nobody does, but today more and more people are dying from this disease. I want to give others the opportunity to spend their final moments in a relaxed and comfortable environment like my Grandpa did at Lindsey Lodge Hospice.

I can honestly say you can not imagine what it is like until you have personally been affected, watched the day by day deterioration and cried yourself to sleep wanting to find a way to save the person you love.

Please sponsor me.
