Story
Finding out a few weeks ago that a pupil was suddenly diagnosed with diabetes Type 1, was a shock. However, I naively thought it would be 'controlled' with a simple injection every day! How wrong was I?
During the first weeks of the holiday, he was admitted to hospital for almost a week. He now has his own 'carbs counting' book, as he needs to work out how many carbs he is eating, to ensure he injects the correct amount of insulin. He loves riding his bike and boxing, however these both need to be closely monitored as too much, along with the carbs and insulin, could cause him big problems. That's all before he has to contend with hypos while his pancreas is working out what is going on!! This isn't something an 11-year-old should be worrying about in his holidays!
Most of you know, Dave and I love to run! Over the last couple of years, we've participated in so many runs 'for fun' or 'to get a PB' without asking for sponsors. Between us, we've run (to name a few) half marathon mountain trails in the Lake District, a 20 mile fell run up the Cheviot last year, many 10K courses, 20 miles in Redcar and I successfully completed my first ever marathon in London this year!
Diabetes isn’t fun! So, finding out about my pupil's diagnosis, and then receiving our GNR numbers within a week of each other, it was a 'no-brainer' that this run was the one where we could raise some vital funds for the amazing work and support which are offered to families in these circumstances. Please help an amazing cause which is close to my heart!
