Story
Rabies is a fatal disease that devastates developing countries in Asia and Africa. Rabies kills an estimated 30,000 people per year, most of these are children under the age of 15, living in rural villages.
In May 2016 we have been given the opportunity to go with Mission Rabies to Malawi, to help vaccinate street/feral/pet dogs against rabies. This will help to stem the disease by elimination of the main disease vector.
Culling is not an effective disease control technique, when dogs are removed from the area - more simply fill their place
Vaccination is the way forward for eradicating rabies in humans and animals.
Dog vaccinations cost £1 for 4
The vaccination process costs just under £1 per dog
For every £5 donated to Mission Rabies, 4 dogs are vaccinated
This is substantially less expensive than the human rabies vaccination, in the UK this costs in at around £180 per person
Davies Veterinary Specialists have generously offered us each a travel grant of £1,200 that will cover our airfare.
So in order to travel with Mission Rabies in 2016, we need to raise a further £1,200 each for food and accommodation, with a donation to Mission Rabies.
Between now and May 2016, we will be participating in a number of events to raise this money and awareness of rabies, and the charities associated.
We
would appreciate any donations or sponsorship that will bring us
closer to our target.
- Any money over £2,400 that we
raise will result in a larger donation to Mission Rabies.
