Story
At the end of this August, I will be taking on the infamous 'Routes Des Grandes Alps' in support of 'Action For Diabetics', a new frontline charity providing care and support children with Type 1 Diabetes in South East Asia.
I'll be cycling (or attempting to) over the French Alps from the shores of Lake Geneva to the Mediterranean coast at Nice, a 6 day, 700km route with a total ascent of 17, 933m, equal to around two Everests of uphill biking.... ouch.
Thankfully, it's all for a good cause. In 2015, Dad and his lifelong friend Jerry Gore (who will also be cycling) set up 'Action for Diabetics (A4D)' - a SE Asian based charity that offers medical supplies, education and opportunities to young kids with Type 1 diabetes in the region's poorest communities.
Although Type 1 diabetes cannot be cured, the treatment is available in more developed Countries allowing sufferers to live a full and active life. However, if left untreated, Type 1 diabetes is hugely debilitating and eventually fatal to kids who develop the condition early on in their lives. Unfortunately, children in underdeveloped parts of SE Asia, and particularly in parts of Myanmar and Laos, simply do not have access to the healthcare and education they need to survive this manageable condition.
By providing education for kids and their families through 'Diabetes Camps' and treatment through sustainable supplies, A4D has already saved the lives of 70 children with Type 1 Diabetes in South East Asia, and continue to work tirelessly in an effort alleviate the suffering of more children and their families.
