Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am walking in the footsteps of the troops of Operation Galia 1944/45. The route I'm taking is the exfiltration route used by the troops to cross the Gothic Line and return behind the Allied front line after many weeks of operating deep in enemy territory. They were being hunted by 6,000 German and fascist Italian troops. In addition to that they would have been subject to Hitler's ' Commando Order' if captured. This would have meant interrogation and summary execution.

I will be walking the route solo. As far as I'm aware this has never been done. I'm also trying to stick, as far as is practically possible, to the original route.

My efforts will benefit young Italians by way of sponsorship to learn English in the UK.

About the charity

The Monte San Martino Trust was founded in 1989 by Keith Killby, a former POW in Italy. The Trust awards English language study bursaries to Italians, aged 18-25, in recognition of the courage and generosity of the Italian people who aided thousands of escaping Allied POWs after the 1943 Armistice.
