Story

The Oxford Young Adult Clinic is a unique community-based service set-up to help young people in the Thames Valley region who suffer from kidney failure. The objectives of the clinic are to reduce isolation, help facilitate acceptance of dialysis or transplantation, reduce denial and make life saving organ transplants last for many years.

Through community clinics outside the hospital setting and social events the Oxford YAC helps young people deal with their kidney disease and get on with their lives. The service now runs a young adult clinic every 6 weeks in the community for young adult transplant patients from all over the Thames Valley. In addition a youth worker reaches out into the community providing 1:1 support to young adult transplant recipients, dialysis patients and any other specific problems requiring increased support, such as with confidence issues or adherence with medication problems. The service is making a huge difference to the lives of these young people by making their transplants last years longer and by helping them build confidence and self-esteem to allow them to achieve in education and employment together with re-building damaged social skills. This innovative service which provides an invaluable peer support network for young adults is funded entirely through donation and fundraising events. Please help us continue to run and grow this fantastic service and help change the lives of these young people and provide them with a bright future.
