Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

During the Bank Holiday weekend 28-29th May, I joined around 3,000 other fundraising trekkers to undertake a challenging 100K walk from Old Deer Park in Richmond, Surrey to Brighton.  It was an amazing experience and walking day and night, completed the challenge in 27 hours.

It was in Richmond that the Royal Star & Garter Homes first began caring for the military family from 1916.  Since then the Charity has evolved to meet the changing needs of ex Service men and women and their partners who are living with a physical disability or with dementia.  This essence of the special brand of quality care we provide is by being leading edge, innovative and constantly seeking improvements to provide brilliant nursing and therapeutic care.

This is the Charity's Centenary which is fabulous achievement - 100 years of providing quality nursing and care so what better way of acknowledging this by walking 1 kilometre for every year the Charity has been in existence.  To add to the sense of occasion, I like the Charity who has continuously provided award winning care for 100 years, will undertake this walk without stopping over en route.  That means a head torch and glow sticks to light my way through the night!

I'm certain this will be a 'challenging challenge'!  It will also be enormous fun and for such a worthwhile cause which I am extremely proud to support, The Royal Star & Garter Homes.

I am also undertaking this trek in memory of my dear mum, Daphne Conway who lived in the Richmond and then Surbiton Royal Star & Garter Home who passed away 2 years ago the weekend of the trek.  Daphne contracted Poliomyelitis in the early 1950s and I grew up not knowing what it was like to have a mum who could walk and do normal things with.  In her memory, I will walk and walk.....because I have the privilege of being able to.

I am also remembering my beautiful and loving yellow Labrador, Dixie, who passed away on 23rd April 2016.  Dixie was an adored 4 legged family member who leaves a huge Labrador shaped gap in our lives. Many a happy mile has been spent walking in the Surrey and Suffolk countryside with our lovely Dixie and she will always be remembered.
