Story
We are "Paul's People" - Mike Brooke, Sarah-Lucie Watson, Tim Davis and Camilla Kerr.
Together, we are guiding Rifleman Paul Jacobs GM who was blinded whilst on operations in Afghanistan. He received the George Medal for exceptional valour on the battlefield after his patrol encountered an improvised explosive device (IED) in Sangin Valley. The explosion left Paul blinded and seriously wounded - but, as he recalls: "I couldn't see a thing and I was bleeding heavily from multiple wounds but I knew I needed to move myself to a safer position for others to rescue me; so I dragged myself to an extraction point and soon lost consciousness." Paul continues: "Memories of that day still torment me. I recall the taste of blood and the smell of the explosions but most of all I remember the deafening sound of bombs and the haunting screams of my friends." Paul was in a coma for a month but when he awoke he realised he was blind. But, as he says: "Physical wounds aside, the biggest scar is on my heart - as a soldier, coming to terms with what had happened was so difficult - to overcome the feeling that at 20 years old, my life was over and not worth living anymore." He concludes: "Blind Veterans UK saved my life."
Now, 7 years on, Paul will be tackling 100kms over the rugged Yorkshire
Dales on 18th & 19th June 2016. As a combined team, we are aiming to
raise £10,000 for essential specialist rehabilitation equipment for our
charity, Blind Veterans UK, which helps ex service men and women from
across the UK, like Paul Jacobs, who have suffered severe sight loss.
Anything you can give today, however small, will be put to immediate use to help those who have served their country, regain as much independence as possible.
This means everything to us.... Now, it's our turn to help Paul who so desperately wants to help others.
Both Paul and the whole team will be so grateful to you if you're able to make a contribution, however small..... As Paul says:
"YOU DON'T NEED SIGHT TO HAVE VISION!"
Just how amazing is that....
A heartfelt thank you to you all.
