I am fundraising for ARCO, a collaborative project between Cape Gate MIAGI Centre for Music, a music project in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa and Birmingham Conservatoire Strings Department.

Arco is aiming to provide the benefits and life changing inspiration of music to children in the most deprived of circumstances. Since January 2016 Arco has been providing transformative music education activities led by Birmingham Conservatoire musicians, acting as role models for vulnerable youngsters living in areas deeply affected by poverty and crime.

Already the project has had a profound effect on everybody involved. The dedication, enthusiasm and tenacity of all the students has been so inspiring and the connections made between teachers and students have been life changing on both sides. 

For the project to go forward and develop we have to continue to raise funds, which is where my viola exam comes in. I thought I would jump in with a challenge at grade 5 but have recently discovered how few skills are transferable between cello. I will be sawing and scraping away with Dixie (my viola), filling out weekly practice diaries, and taking lessons with many kind and tolerant viola players.
