St Bede’s Unit is part of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead and offers emotional and physical support and respite for patients with life-limiting illnesses. Some patients also choose to come to St Bede’s Unit for their final few weeks of life. The unit can also help to provide support for family and friends during this difficult time.
My wife's side of the family made the decision to start raising money for this special place following the sad loss of my mother in law Joy. The nursing staff provided superb full time care during the final weeks of her life and they also gave much needed emotional support to the family. I would love to do my bit to help make a positive difference and just make things a bit easier for people.
All money raised will go to St Bede’s Unit who are currently saving its donations to buy a specialist sensory bath suite and to refurbish the ward so it feels more of a home from home for the patients.
What I am hoping to do is something perhaps a little bit different, and hopefully will take less time than it would for me to do the Great North Run for example.
My aim is to bend a 1 kilo pack of 6 inch nails. I hope to do this within 30 minutes on 6 June 2015. They are standard nails, about 40 nails in a pack. No tricks of course, no leverage etc. I will wrap the nails to protect my hands.
This is not an easy thing to do. I never know if/how they are going to go until I try. Bending them using muscle/strength and mind is very, very hard and, if this is what I need to do it on the day, I doubt whether I would finish the task, certainly it would take much longer. In view of this, not wanting to wimp out, 10 is good, 20 would be amazing, 40 would be crazy!
