"When I'm Sixty-Four..."

As I remember the Beatles tune from my school days and realize I have arrived at the age when I could ask do you still need me? I have instead decided to finally run a marathon. Sixty-Four is not too old. I'm running the London Marathon for my friend's daughter, Eva, to raise money for Reach on the 24th of April. Each year, babies are born in the missing part of one or both arms and hands.  Added to these are a small number of children who lose limbs or parts of limbs due to traumatic incidents or necessary surgery.  For many of the families of these children, like Eva and her parents, it is the first time that they will have come across such a situation. Reach aims to provide affected families with the opportunity to get together, share experiences and information about what to do (or not to do), where to go for advice regarding treatment and in short, to help them realise that they are not alone.

Als ich diesen Song der Beatles in meiner Schulzeit hörte, konnte ich mir nicht vorstellen, mit 64 meinen ersten Marathon zu laufen. Aber am 24. April 2016 ist es so weit: Ich laufe für Eva, die Tochter von Freunden in England, und für Reach den Marathon in London. Jedes Jahr kommen Säuglinge ohne Arme oder Hände auf die Welt. Kinder verlieren ihre Gliedmaßen durch tragische Unfälle oder schwerwiegende Fehler bei Operationen. Für viele betroffene Familien ist es das erste Mal, dass sie mit solch einer Situation konfrontiert sind, wie für Eva und ihre Eltern. Hier hilft Reach. Reach gibt diesen Familien die Möglichkeit,  sich durch Erfahrungsaustausch gegenseitig zu unterstützen, bietet Informationen zu Behandlungsmöglichkeiten und berät in allen Fragen des täglichen Lebens.
