Story

Some people couldn't make the morning and said they wanted to donate some money to CdC - here is your opportunity. Thank you...

Poppy was born with a rare genetic syndrome called Cri du Chat. She has developmental delay and lifelong learning difficulties. She has had a few operations and has multiple appointments with medical professionals each month.

Cri du Chat Syndrome (‘cry of the cat’ in French) is a genetic disorder caused by part of Chromosome 5 missing. This is why 5/5 (5th May) is the main awareness day.

It was first identified in 1963 by Professor Lejeune (who also identified Downs Syndrome). He described it as having a distinctive cat like cry in infancy. As well as a variety of physical features, Cri du Chat syndrome can have a very varied level of disability ranging from mild to severe.

Currently it is estimated that there is approximately a 1 in 50,000 chance of anyone being born with the syndrome.
