Story
On Sunday July 17th, our intrepid team of 16 “aspiring” paddlers + a drummer will take to the River Thames and exercise their boxing muscle, gained through months of training both in and outside of the boxing ring... (yikes!). We'll soon find out if there are links between boxing and paddling...!
Racing against over 50 teams representing other charities, our team supporting Carney’s Community will battle it out over 3 heats on the 250m course along the river, vying to take home the Challenge Cup in an action-packed 8-boat final... Here we'll learn whether all those months of pad-work and skipping have paid off..!
Carney's Community is a charity set up by Fitzroy Lodge Trustee, George Turner, and Head Coach, Mark Reigate. It aims to reduce offending, re-offending and anti-social behaviour, whilst improving social mobility and community cohesion. They achieve this by engaging a variety of young people, but with a focus on the most disadvantaged and excluded, in boxing fitness sessions, whilst offering intensive, one-to-one mentoring and then the opportunity for them to qualify as sports coaches and/ or personal trainers. They believe that by empowering young people through mentoring, participation, focusing on their strengths and learning from each other, they can improve not only their opportunities, but also those of their local communities.
The event takes place at Canbury Gardens, located adjacent to the river off Lower Ham Road, Kingston upon Thames (KT2 5AU) and kicks off at 9.30am.
Please show your support and cheer us on by stopping by for a fun day out and/or donating to this incredibly worthy cause - all donations are hugely appreciated and gratefully received..!
