Story
7 years ago a group of young friends got together and discussed the need to make social change in their country, none of them had a background to call upon but together they formed a group to help as many people as possible.
Together they formed MySmallHelp Nepal.
Many of you have been to our fundraisers over the years and each and every penny has been spent on projects that required urgent attention, be it child sponsorship, work at the orphanage, building schools, or re-launching medical centres. Desperately poor people have been taken to hospital for life changing operations, shelters have been built for the homeless. This has only been possible through dedication and hard work by the MSH team and your generous sponsorship.
On Sunday I received the terrible news that one of our founding members was fighting her own battle in silence.
Pramila has been with us every step of the way, she is our accounts manager in Nepal, mentor to orphaned children, advisor to the teachers and our main interface to the government in Kathmandu.
Without her hard work and dedication we would not have been able to make the progress and impact that we have made so successfully over the past few years.
Like many Nepalis the family income is desperately low. A well paid teacher will be lucky to take home £40 per month. In Pramila's case she is part of a farming family on a low wage.
Pramila has 2nd stage cancer. She had an operation a month ago and she has just undergone 15 days of Chemo. Needless to say I will spare you the detail on the impact this has had on her and her family.
Here is the issue.....
- Healthcare is not free in Nepal.
- Treatment for Cancer is not priced according to income.
- No treatment = the inevitable....
Doctors have advised she will need a further 4 sessions but the prognosis is good if she can continue the treatment.
Each session costs £625.....
Yes, nearly 1 1/2 times the average annual salary.
Now I know we all get asked to help on worthy charitable events, and we are all guilty of getting a bit desensitised to the numerous calls for assistance, but today I'm asking you all to share this message with your closest friends - people that you trust, friends you admire, friends you would reach out to for help, friends you would help without hesitation.
I want to help one of my friends who in turn will continue to help others in the same way that she has done over the years with MySmallHelp.
Can I please ask you to donate the cost of a drink for you and your best mate. £10 donations will go a long way to get Pramila the treatment she needs to get back on her feet.
If you don't have any friends imagine that you do.... and donate anyway.
If you have many friends buy a round then tell them they need to get a round in too!
If you feel uncomfortable asking friends to donate - send the mail then later tell them your account has been compromised ! (clearly after they have brought you a drink!)
If you have been in the bar all day and have no money send £1 as every little helps!
Seriously, Pramila is a proud woman, proud of her county and proud of her culture.
Too proud to ask for help.
Now that we are aware of her condition all of her friends are rallying to get her the help she needs to beat her illness.
Please give what you can or simply pass on the message and help us collect enough to get her through the remaining cycles of treatment.
Once again thanks for your continued support.
Many thanks
Lee & the MSH teams.
