Story
Hello, I am Rachel!
I am running the Leicester half marathon on October 23rd 2016 and despite being such a challenge for me, I am determined to finish it in just over 2 hours. I believe that by running this half marathon, I could raise a little money for Antibiotic Research UK.
This particular charity is of particular interest to me, as studying Microbiology has shown me just how big of a problem resistance, to the most commonly used antibiotics, is becoming. Patients undergo several routine treatments, such as; organ transplantation, hip and knee replacements, cancer treatment, and all of these patients are given antibiotics to prevent infection. However, bacteria are adapting to these treatments and are finding ways to resist and proliferate. The frequency of deaths caused by bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics is increasing and if there are no new antibiotics, then infections will become untreatable. One of the biggest concerns being new emerging bacteria that will not be effective by these antibiotics that are used today.
Raising money for Antibiotic Research UK will support researchers and UK universities through the discovery and development of new antibiotics, which could save even more lives in the future.
