Story
Hey everyone, I shall be running the Birmingham half marathon next Sunday... Even though I've only given myself 2 weeks to prepare! (Stupid I know, but as it's for such an amazing cause, I thought I'd go for it)
The charity I shall be running for is a girls orphanage in India. As you may or may not know, female foeticide/infanticide and abandonment of female babies is a common occurrence in India and so the work of such charities is crucial in helping to overcome such issues.
The charity houses, clothes, feeds and educates young orphan girls.
Left on the streets as a baby herself 60 years ago, Prakash Kaur has dedicated her life to the noble but onerous mission of rescuing unwanted and unclaimed newborn girls and giving them a secure home and future.
At the moment, the homes houses 64 girls aged between 4 and 19. Despite Bibi Ji's increasing age, she retains the strength to look after them all, ensure they receive a good education and manages to make chapattis for everyone 3 times a day, 7 days a week!
The stigma of the 'girl child' remains to be a major issue in India and so the efforts of Bibi Prakash Kaur's Unique Home are applaudable for actively working against this social injustice and giving girls a future they would never have had.
