Iwill be cycling from London to Paris at the end of May 2016 for a charitycalled the Fund4Trees, where I will be representing The Ancient Tree Forum, forwhom I have recently become a Trustee. The purpose of the ride is to help raisemoney for the Fund4Trees, which is a charity that supports research into treediseases and other tree related issues, and to deliver an important documentwritten by the Trees and Design Action Group, ‘Trees in Hard Landscapes: AGuide to Delivery’. This document explores the practical challenges andsolutions for integrating trees in 21st century streets, civilspaces and car parks. The document has recently been translated into French, and we will be hand delivering the document to the 99th FrenchMayors Congress on the 31st of May, in Paris. Combined with this, wewill also be taking a small tree grown from an acorn of a 1000 year oldOak tree from Gt. Windsor Park, to give to our French colleagues, as an act ofsolidarity. The tree has been kindly donated by the Crown Estate, and by TedGreen, the founder of the Ancient Tree Forum.
Sixriders representing the key national arboricultural organisations will leavethe Houses of Parliament on Sunday 29th of May, to make the 285 mileride to Paris. We are very lucky to have gained the support of LordFramlingham, who met several of the riders last month at the Houses of Parliament, for a photo shoot (attached above) with the French translation of the document, and the sapling Oak.
It’svery easy to overlook the importance of trees. Never before have our trees andforests been under so much threat, either from climate change, new pest anddiseases, or the pressure from development. In the last 25 years there has beena catastrophic increase in the spread of many new pest and diseases intothe UK, whose range is becoming more northerly due to the warming of our localclimate, and from the opening up of borders across Europe. Perhaps, the bestknown disease is currently ‘Ash Die Back’, which is affecting our third mostcommonly occurring tree, and therefore could affect billions oftrees. Unfortunately, most of the other diseases haven’t received thesame publicity, some of which could affect your health, like the toxiccaterpillar hairs from ‘Oak Processionary Moth’, and therefore havereceived little or no funding for research into their causes or how tocombat them. I’m hoping you might sponsor me, so that money can be channelledinto research by people who understand the problems.
Here’sa few key reminders what trees do for us FOR FREE-
Trees are the lungs of the planet. Four people get one day’s worth of oxygen from one large tree Trees devour carbon dioxide. They absorb CO2, removing and storing the carbon, whilst releasing oxygen we breathe back into the air. In one year, an acre of mature trees can absorb the amount of CO2 equivalent to a car driving 26,000 miles Working hard to right our wrongs The US Forest Service reports, that the trees around the world removed about 30% of the worlds fossil fuel emissions between 1990 to 2007 Ecosystem service pay back For every pound spent on planting a tree in a city, they pay us back up to 5 times in terms of cleaner air, lower energy costs, improved water quality and storm-water control ,and increased property values
