In November 2014 I had the opportunity to visit Bosnia & Herzegovina (BiH) as part of a delegation organized by the Remembering Srebrenica charity initiative.
The purpose of the visit was to educate the delegates about the genocide that took place in 1995 in a town called Srebrenica in BiH where 8000 Muslim men and boys were massacred by Serb military and para military forces.
Our visit took us to Sarajevo, Srebrenica and Tuzla and during these 4 days we met survivors of the genocide to hear their horrific stories first hand, we met some of the surviving mothers of Srebrenica, visited the memorial center and finally visited the ICMP ( International Commission for Missing Persons) offices where the search and identification of the missing people of the genocide are still going on today.
This was an intense experience and demonstrated to us, what hatred and discrimination can lead to and we pledged to work in our communities to create a cohesive society and speak out against hate, discrimination and racism and support peace and justice universally.
My pledge is to spread the message of peace and justice and in addition, to raise awareness and funds for the Remembering Srebrenica project and to support the mothers of Srebrenica initiative. This initiative aims to help the surviving mothers of the genocide by providing support for their fight for justice.
