Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
At the start of the the summer of 2016, my mum visited her GP complaining of a painful sensation in her right breast. She was sent to the Royal Glamorgan hospital for a mammogram. When her test results returned, the diagnosis was a malignant tumour, which required a lumpectomy followed by a course of radiotherapy. Fortunately, my mum is a strong and courageous woman and her prognosis is very positive, and she has now returned to doing everything she was doing before her treatment. As a family, we are acutely aware that my mum's outcome was largely down to her initial screening, expert judgement from her medical team, the fast turnaround to treatment, and the wonderful care she received along the way from her doctors, surgeon and nurses.
On October 2nd, I will be running the Cardiff half marathon to help raise money for the "Giving to Pink" campaign. Founded in September 2014 by Clare Smart Giving to Pink (http://givingtopink.com) is a group of people whose lives have all been touched in some way by breast cancer. Some of the group, based out of the Royal Glamorgan hospital, have been patients and others are the medical staff that do a wonderful job supporting people through their treatment and afterwards. Giving to Pink is raising funds for a Specialist Breast Care Unit at the Royal Glamorgan hospital, that would act as a “Centre of Excellence” to ensure the diagnosis process can be streamlined to minimise the number of visits a patient needs to make to hospital and to reduce the time to diagnosis.
I will also be making a donation to Breast Cancer Care, who are the only UK wide charity providing care, information and support to people affected by breast cancer and strive to ensure that every person affected can get the best treatment, information and support.
My mum was lucky, and I sincerely hope that with your kind donations, we can contribute to the ongoing support of both charities, to help maximise the odds of more people beating this terrible disease. Please help me, help those, who helped my mum.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they'll send your money directly to the charity.
