We raise funds for student hardship to ensure architecture remains open to all

Story

I'm probably the only one member of the team who is not a regular cyclist. I've only done 20 miles in training.....so a few hills like Winter Hill and Shap may be interesting!

I've joined the team, not just to be challenged but also to support the fundraising efforts as both an RIBA National Councillor, and a member of the NW Regional Council.

It's a really good cause - and we need to support students who bravely embark upon the marathon training to be an Architect - especially in these days of ever increasing tuition fees and spiralling student debt. We need to support the new recruits to our profession!

RIBA’s Student Hardship Fund is designed to make architecture accessible to all. We at RIBA are strong believers in that no matter what your background, if you have a passion to be an architect you should be able to fulfil it. It now costs an architecture student around £88,000 to complete their education. This means that talented, ambitious and driven young people are being ousted from the profession due to financial hardship. It also means that Architecture is losing out, from a lack of diversity, versatility and imagination that comes from professions that are truly open to all. At RIBA we want to fix this, relieve the debt of young architects and make the profession accessible for all to flourish in. The Student Hardship Fund was set up in 1997. To date we have helped hundreds students, with grants of over £85,000 being awarded last year alone. Every penny that comes in to the Student Hardship Fund goes directly back out to help architecture students across the UK. If you’re an established architect, a relative of a studying one or just want to see young people excel in their field without the constraints and worries of debt then please donate to RIBA’s Student Hardship Fund today. Together we can make sure the architects of the future are helped along their way.
