Story

My family and I have decided to raise money for the Intensive Care Unit at Lewisham Hospital for the outstanding care my Grandad received during his final hours.

The weekend of Sat the 4 of May the family was preparing to celebrate my husband’s 40 Birthday, sadly the events of this weekend have changed our lives forever.

Paramedics arrived at my Grandad’s home where they worked extremely hard to resuscitate him and against all odds they managed to get his heart beating.

After an anxious wait at Lewisham Hospital the family were informed that Grandad had suffered a heart attack and that his condition was critical. Grandad was taken to the Intensive Care Unit, coma induced and on life support. The next 24 hours were to be crucial.

The designated nurse Christine, who I believe to this day was an angel sent from God, encouraged the family to talk to Grandad, hold his hand so that he could hear our voices so he be given a reason to fight. Christine not only provided Grandad with professional care but also supported us as a family, what may seem like the smallest of things made such a huge difference during this emotional and difficult time.

After a restless night the family gathered at the hospital early on Sunday the 5 May to speak with the consultant. Sadly we received the devastating news that Grandad would never wake up, which I am sure you can imagine was heart breaking. As a family and one that I can say I’m proud of a mutual unspoken decision was made for all to stay with Grandad during his final hours.

Without the care of ALL the medical staff at the hospital and the specialised equipment in the Intensive care unit made available to my Grandad we would not have had the opportunity to have such precious time with him. My family are eternally grateful for the time we had with him which enabled us to let Grandad know how much he meant to each of us in our own special way and say our goodbyes.

We wish to raise funds to help the Intensive Care Unit to continue to provide such vital care and support and in memory of my Grandad – A great man who will be sadly missed.
